Abstract. Enhancing the productivity of farm animals is a key objective for ensuring food security. One of the most critical conditions for the efficiency of livestock farming is adequate mineral nutrition, particularly the supply of the essential trace element selenium to the body. Selenium deficiency leads to the development of pathologies, reduced immunity, and decreased productive traits. This paper presents a systematic analysis of current literature on the use of selenium-containing supplements in animal husbandry. The main focus is on their influence on metabolic processes, productive indicators, and the composition of the intestinal microflora in cattle, pigs, and poultry. The literature search was conducted in the RSCI, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases for the period 2000-2025. The review examines current understanding of selenium metabolism and the role of selenoproteins (glutathione peroxidase, selenoprotein P, etc.) in antioxidant defense and redox signaling. It is noted that, despite the proven effectiveness of organic forms of selenium (selenomethionine) compared to inorganic salts, the fundamental mechanisms of selenium's effect on the body, especially on the gut microbiome and the "gut-liver" axis, remain fragmentarily studied. Particular attention is paid to innovative sources of the trace element: selenium-enriched probiotics and selenium nanoparticles. It is shown that these forms not only increase the bioavailability of selenium but are also capable of modulating the composition of the intestinal microflora, increasing the abundance of beneficial bacteria (Lactobacillus, Akkermansia, Prevotella), which indirectly improves host metabolism, antioxidant status, and productivity. In conclusion, the necessity of developing reference intervals for selenium content in biological substrates for highly productive animals is substantiated, and the promising nature of using innovative forms of selenium for the targeted correction of the microbiome and improving the quality of livestock products is emphasized.
