Summary. The article presents data on the dynamics of number and change in breed structure of the Russian sheep and goat breeding in the last twenty years. The questions of the breeding process are considered depending on the most economically advantageous traits of the productivity in sheep and goats. The expediency of conserving the genetic resources of small sheep breeds with high adaptive abilities is substantiated. A brief description of the most promising breeds and types is given.

Key words: sheep, goats, breeds, preservation of genetic resources.
