Variability in the indicators of microbial fermentation and digestibility of feed substrate with the introduction of the Baikal skullcap (Scutellaria baicalensis)

Abstract. The article presents the results of an in vitro study on the artificial rumen “ANKOM Daisy II” and in situ study on a fistulated Kazakh white-headed bull on the effect of various doses of Scutellaria baicalensis of the Lamiaceae family on the dry matter digestibility and indicators of microbial fermentation of concentrates. The following samples were used when conducting an in situ study: I - crushed barley grain; II - crushed barley grain + 33 mg of skullcap; III - crushed barley grain + 50 mg of skullcap; IV - crushed barley grain + 60 mg of skullcap. During the in situ experiment, it was revealed that the digestibility of the sample under No. III, in which the Baikal skullcap was added in the amount of 5.0 mg per 500 mg of DM (dry matter) of the sample, increased by 3.18% (P≤0.05); 0.58 and 1.11% in comparison with I, II and IV samples. The accumulation of acetic acid in sample No. III was higher compared to sample No. I, respectively, by 8.4%, it should also be noted that the content of all detected volatile fatty acids was higher in this sample relative to other samples (No. I, II and IV). The maximum amount of total nitrogen was noted in the rumen content of sample III, which was 32.0 mg/% (P≤0.05), 22.8 and 5.0 mg/% higher than values I, II and IV, respectively. A similar trend was observed in the concentration of protein nitrogen in sample No. III, so they exceeded sample I by 18.10 mg/% in this indicator. The introduction of Baikal skullcap in the amount of 5.0 mg contributes to an increase in dry matter digestibility of the feed substrate by 8.9%, the concentration of total nitrogen - by 49.0% and volatile fatty acids - by 8.9%. Thus, the results of in vitro experiment made clear that 5.0 mg is the best amount of Baikal skullcap for introduction into the diet.
