Abstract.  The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of tillage methods and preceding crops on soil moisture reserves, the nature of its use, and the yield of spring durum wheat under the arid conditions of the Orenburg Pre-Ural region. A two-factor experiment was conducted in 2023-2025. The preceding crops were grain sorghum and chickpea - factor A. After harvesting the preceding crops, the field was cultivated in three ways: deep loosening, shallow tillage, and no tillage (zero tillage) – factor B. The size of the experimental plot was 228 m² (7.6 m × 30 m). Plot variants were randomly placed in four replicates. It was established that productive moisture reserves at the time of sowing are determined by the combined interaction of the tillage method and the ameliorative characteristics of the preceding crop. Deep tillage provided the highest moisture reserves on average across both preceding crops. However, under no-till conditions after sorghum, higher moisture reserves were formed than after chickpea, which is explained by the snow-trapping effect of stubble and the preservation of biogenic porosity created by the root system. The water consumption coefficient of wheat under deep tillage was 7–8% lower compared to minimum tillage methods. The identified difference in the water consumption coefficient between the preceding crops amounted to 149 m³/t in favor of sorghum. Wheat yield after sorghum exceeded yield after chickpea by 0.30 t/ha. The maximum yield was obtained in the "deep tillage × sorghum" treatment, while the minimum was recorded under no-till after chickpea. The statistical significance of the effect of both factors was confirmed by analysis of variance (p<0.05).
