Abstract. Uncontrolled use of antibacterial drugs has led to the global spread of antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains. This review examines the advantages of using phytobiotics compared to feed antibiotics in livestock farming. Phytobiotics do not induce resistance in microorganisms, do not accumulate in animal tissues, and have a positive effect on intestinal microflora, including supporting the growth of beneficial lactobacilli, which collectively improves the performance of poultry and livestock. Phytobiotics exhibit multifactorial effects on the body: direct suppression of pathogens (alkaloids, terpenes, and polyphenols disrupt DNA synthesis and bacterial membrane integrity), inhibition of bacterial quorum sensing, and enhanced probiotic efficacy. In this paper, we summarize data on the distribution, phytochemical composition, biological activity, and experience with the use of several medicinal plants from northern Eurasia in poultry and livestock farming. We identified prospects for the further development and expanded use of phytobiotics in agriculture (due to varying effectiveness and insufficient understanding of their mechanisms of action), as well as principles for their step-by-step development (from in vitro screening to in vivo validation). The paper also describes possible challenges in the use of phytobiotics and potential solutions.
